Safety Training: Essential No Matter Whose Shirt Employees Wear
May 20, 2015 3:55:00 PM

It’s busy in there. Training is essential.
Last month, Rob Loose, who is MAU’s safety manager, wrote a blog post about safety training. If you missed enjoying the post, click here. Rob talks about his first job working at a candy manufacturer. In particular, he remembers being put on the job with no safety training, a memory that makes him cringe looking back. Rob then goes on to talk about OSHA’s recent safety initiatives directed at a contract workforce.

OSHA began their contract employee initiatives a couple of years ago. I was in Washington, D.C. last year when OSHA and the American Staffing Association signed an Alliance Agreement to improve the safety of contractors. At its heart, the agreement aims to further protect and educate contract associates as they work on an assignment.

Recently, OSHA fined a Georgia employer and their staffing firm for a series of violations (Click here to read the story). OSHA cited the host employer for issues related to chemical exposure and mismarked exits. The issues translated into a $187,500 fine. Also, OSHA fined the workforce firm $58,500 because its employees were exposed to fall hazards, noise and unguarded machines. Of note here, while OSHA’s host employer citations were for more general issues related to chemical exposure and mismarked exits, the staffing firm citations appear to be targeted to  citing the staffing firm for issues specific to their employees. (Of note, it seems that the staffing firm had an on-site manager at the client’s facility)

This release emphasizes Rob’s conclusion last month: it’s imperative to prove safety training and a safe work environment to all employees, regardless of whose shirt they wear.
