Career Advice from the ‘Trick-or-Treaters’ in Your Life
October 29, 2020 12:00:00 PM

Have you ever heard the saying, there’s a lot we can learn from our children? While it is the job of parents and adults to teach children the things they need to know about the world, we can also learn some very worthwhile lessons from the children in our lives. Experienced ‘trick-or-treaters’ will tell you that there are definitely some “tricks” to scoring you more treats on Halloween night.

So, this weekend while you’re out scouring the neighborhood with the children in your life, pay attention because you may pick up some solid career tip advice in some rather unexpected ways!

To get more treats, you have to stand out!

The most interesting costume gets noticed. Have you ever walked into a job interview or even the office at your current job and saw that you were dressed exactly the same as everyone else? While you do need to {{cta(‘c7e662f2-67b5-4e3f-ae78-e3ed8c355b89’)}}, try to venture outside of your norm or what might be expected to make sure you get noticed. You only get one first impression; make sure it’s a good one.

A smile makes everything sweeter!

I bet if you watch your children once they ring the bell or knock on the door, you’ll see a big smile stretch across their faces. Even if they don’t know why, they instinctively know that smile is going to score them more treats. A smile makes you more approachable. Make sure when you arrive to your interview or the office for the day you greet the hiring manager or your co-workers with a smile.

Engage before asking for the treats!

As soon as the door opens, you’ll notice the group look up at the person holding the treats and repeat the Halloween mantra “Trick-or-Treat!”. When the kids focus on the person and engage them in conversation, it paints them in a much more favorable light than if they just grabbed the treats and ran off. During your job interview, make sure to engage the hiring manager by {{cta(‘fd704371-3a32-4370-a9c2-cb70078f369d’)}} to show your interest in the position. Not every day at the office will be perfect so even if you find yourself in a difficult or awkward situation, take the time to be personable. It’ll be worth it in the long run.

Make it easy to get more treats!

When the time comes, all the kids will hold their bags wide open. If you want to be considered for a position or want to advance in your career, make sure those around you know that you are “open” to receiving feedback, both positive and negative.

A thank you goes a long way!

Once the expected candy has been handed out, you should hear a chorus of “thank yous.”. If they’re really lucky (and adorable), those good manners might even score them some extra treats. Once again, you only get one first impression, and there is absolutely no such thing as being too polite. This is good advice for not only the office, but just life in general.

Halloween-Trick-or-TreatersWhile this Halloween’s trick-or-treating festivities will definitely look different than Halloweens in the past, hopefully, you will still be able to get out there with your family and create some new (and safe) memories. At first glance, trick-or-treating seems most beneficial to the children, but with some out-of-the-box thinking and solid observation skills, you might be able to get some treats out of the event as well.
