Healthy Competition
Businesses Reward Employees for Living Healthy
Georgia, South Carolina – October 2007 – It was only a matter of time before employers joined the "exercise" and "eat right" mantra. Many people are simply tired of today’s buzz surrounding American lifestyles and eating habits, but some companies are putting a positive spin on things.
One local staffing company, MAU, Inc., went as far as to create a voluntary health competition for its employees complete with cash prizes to the employees who could prove they were the healthiest.
The "Look Good, Feel Good" competition, had employees track their athletic and nutritional lifestyle for six consecutive weeks to earn points. Points were awarded for activities ranging from sit-ups, push ups, cardio exercises and weight training to dieting items such as drinking water and not eating chocolate.
At the end of the competition, the top five employees in a "Beginner" and "Experienced" group with the most points were awarded up to $500.
According to top executives, the competition has been deemed a success. An employee BLOG on the MAU website revealed stories of employees who lost weight, altered their diet or started a personal exercise program as a result of the company’s efforts.
The Health Competition idea was modified to fit the company by Randy Hatcher, the President of MAU, Inc., after he participated in a similar competition amongst his peers. "[The program] has significantly changed the way that I exercise and the way I eat," Randy said when he announced the program with high hopes the competition would inspire employees to healthier lifestyles as it did for him.
Randy was excited throughout the competition, challenging co-workers and employees to exercise and eat healthy and has even initiated a second round of competition.
Located in over 12 offices in Georgia, South Carolina and Illinois, or online at www.mau.com, MAU, Inc. (Management, Analysis & Utilization) is a certified minority owned company specializing in full service human resources, staffing, recruiting and outsourcing.
