How to Recover from Workaholism
July 5, 2017 3:00:00 PM

Do you or someone you love suffer from workaholism?

Now this is not your average, dedicated hard worker, but is someone who is consumed by their job. While there are some benefits of being a workaholic, such as the feeling of accomplishment after finishing a difficult project, a raise, or career advancement, these rewards may only last a short time. According to an article published on the American Psychological Association website, “Some of the strongest negative relationships were found between workaholism and job stress, work-life conflict and burnout.” Your passion and enthusiasm for the job can be detrimental to your health and even harmful to your career.

Are you looking to add some balance back into your life? If so, here are some habits you should be practicing to get you back on track.

1. Make Time for Yourself

You can do this a multitude of ways, like taking a lunch break instead of working through lunch, having a hobby or workout that you do after work, or calling in sick when you have the flu. It’s important to recharge so that you don’t get burnt out. If you’re always tired and stressed from work, that can stifle your creativity and productivity. Don’t forget to use those vacation days that you’ve earned!

2. Prioritize and Organize

Don’t take on more work than you can handle.  It’s great if you can lend a hand in another department or work on a special project for your manager, but when you it starts to interfere with your main responsibilities, it may be time to step back and refocus. Think about your priorities and your goals, create a task board, and learn to say no sometimes.

3. Give Yourself Some Credit

Do you find yourself dwelling on projects after they’ve been completed? How about being overly critical and thinking to yourself that you should have done something differently? It is okay to reflect on an assignment and make notes for the next one, but don’t put yourself down. When find yourself over-analyzing your work, remember all that you’ve accomplished and be proud of it.

Always go above and beyond in your career, but don’t let it take control of your life. Not allowing yourself to have a life outside of work could easily turn a dream job into a nightmare. Remember to take breaks, focus on your goals, and be confident in yourself.

Does your current job have zero work/life balance? It might be time for a change.
