Recently, I had to relocate to a different country because of my husband’s career. While this process can be a very fun, it is also scary and challenging. Finding a new place to stay, making new friends, and of course, finding a job are all hurdles to overcome when relocating. If you’re one of the lucky ones, and you’re relocating to a different country -or city- because you already have a job, congratulations!

If you’re in the process of moving and looking for a job, we congratulate to you, too. We know it takes a lot of courage! But don’t worry. We have 5 tips to make this process easier for you.

1. Update Your Resume

This might sound obvious, but the first step you need to follow is updating your resume. Remember with your resume, you’re selling your skills to an employer in the hopes to have an interview. Make sure you have all the needed information to prove to them you’re the right fit for the job. Add your most recent experience, and if you’re applying for a particularly skilled job and you have experience in that area, make sure to add it to your resume.{{cta(‘d464b0b0-c536-4485-a34d-08331c9feeb4′,’justifycenter’)}}

Pro Tip: In your cover letter and resume you can also add a potential arrival date to the new city you’ll be relocating to, which takes us to tip #2.

2. Be Transparent

My best advice is for you to start looking for a job before you actually move. However, during your jobs search, be transparent about your relocation. When applying to jobs, it can be tempting to say you already live there, but unless you have a private jet that can take you to an in-person interview in a few hours, this plan is not going to work. Remember, first impressions matter! You don’t want to start a relationship by lying, the truth always comes out.

3. Do Your Research

Look for companies in the area that you would like to work for, and reach out to them. In today’s world, we have many options to approach companies: applying on their website or LinkedIn profile, visiting their office directly, or filling out a form so they can get in touch with you. Some of them even have the option to reach out to them via Facebook! Use this to your advantage and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams! The worse thing that can happen is that they say no, but if you don’t at least try, then that’s the only answer you’ll ever get. 

4. Job Boards Are Your Best Allies

Use the different job boards available like Indeed, Monster, Zip Recruiter and Career Builder to look for a job. One of the best things about job boards is you don’t have to live in the same city that you are looking for a job you have the freedom to search by either title or location. You can even search for jobs or companies that will help you fund your move by looking for positions that offer relocation assistance! 

Many companies rely on these job boards to find some of their best candidates. Use this to your advantage!

Pro Tip: Create a profile and update all your information so you can use the ‘quick apply’ option that many of these job boards offer.

5. Consider Working a Temp Job

While this is not a long-term solution, getting a temporary job might be beneficial (especially if you’re new in the area) for several reasons:

1. You get familiarized with the area
2. You can make new connections
3. You can gain additional experience
4. It often leads to a more permanent career
