That is the question posed in the generalist vs. specialist debate. To begin this discussion, one must first understand what it means to be generalist as opposed to a specialist. Dictionary.com defines a generalist as a person whose knowledge, aptitudes, and skills are applied to a field as a whole or to a variety of different fields; as opposed to a specialist who is defined as a person who devotes himself or herself to one subject or to one particular branch of a subject or pursuit. In today’s changing job landscape does it pay to be a generalist or a specialist?
