Have You Tested Positive for Senioritis?

Whether you are a high school student preparing to go to college or enter the workforce or a college student ready to walk across the stage for graduation, the end of a chapter in your life is quickly approaching.

You may have started the school year off strong and determined to cross the finish line, but as time progressed, that determination probably started to dissipate. You may have found yourself “tested positive” for a case of senioritis… among other things!

Senioritis can be defined as an “a decline in motivation or academic performance that supposedly afflicts some seniors in high school, especially in their last term(Dictionary.com).

Common symptoms for senioritis include, but are not limited to:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Fatigue
  • Procrastination
  • Laziness
  • Decline in grades

Coming from someone who recently graduated from a university, I can confirm that I, too, tested positive for senioritis during my last semester. Senioritis is a common diagnosis, but luckily, there are many treatments and remedies you can try!

Continue reading for 4 of the best at-home remedies you can try to help recover from senioritis.

An early symptom for senioritis is a loss of interest in school-related tasks. As soon as you start experiencing this symptom, try to stop it in its tracks. Refocus and set your goals.

Try setting S.M.A.R.T goals! A SMART goal is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. You can read more about setting SMART goals here!

Once you begin to slack off, bad habits will start to form, which may further progress the symptoms of senioritis.

If you have senioritis, you might be procrastinating on assignments or even skipping important daily tasks. You probably have a lot on your mind, so it is easy to forget things. Creating a checklist and marking things off as you complete them, or getting a new planner and keeping it updated will help you keep yourself accountable. Try checking things off early to give yourself extra time in the day to enjoy other activities!

One of the most common symptoms of senioritis is laziness, not only in tasks related to school but also physically. If you find yourself in a rut, start a simple exercise routine to help you stay active. It could be as simple as walking a few blocks around your neighborhood or campus, opening a gym membership, or at-home workouts. Plus, an exercise routine may make time seem to pass by faster!

You’ve made it this far. You have overcome many obstacles – challenging classes, strict teachers or professors, difficult exams – why quit now? It is not long now before it is all behind you. Look forward to upcoming milestones such as graduation, starting your first career, or interviewing for your dream job!

Perhaps the best way to look forward to what's ahead is to start applying for jobs. Don’t hesitate to check out positions on different job boards, like Monster, ZipRecruiter or Glassdoor, or even the MAU job board. Most colleges also have a job board that can help you find an internship to gain experience in your chosen field. Reach out to your professors as they often have great connections that could help make it easier to get that internship and start your professional network. For jobs that require experience, you may find this article helpful!

The good news about senioritis is that it is a short-term condition. There are so many at-home remedies you can try to find a cure, including those listed above.

The next steps in life are exciting and something to look forward to, so it is essential to persevere and push through. You've made it this far, and you can finally see the light at the end of a long tunnel!
