Working Towards Your Dream Job
April 20, 2016 1:00:00 PM

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question we have all been asked at least once in our lives. When we viewed the world through a child’s eyes it was easy to respond to that question with answers that ranged from doctors and lawyers to princesses and superheroes. If I were to ask you the same question today, how would you respond? Would your answer be any different? Has the journey to adulthood jaded your perception of the possibilities of your dream job?

The truth of the matter is, many of us have become stuck in a job that simply pays the bills, but it is far from being a fulfilling career. The burden of adulthood and all of its responsibilities has reared its ugly head. You feel as though you can’t leave your current position because after all, the bills don’t pay themselves! It’s easy to admit defeat and give up on your dream. It’s easy to convince yourself your dream was unrealistic, silly, or unobtainable. We all know anything worth having doesn’t come easy! So ask yourself, is your dream job still worth having?

Yes, my friend! Your dream job is worth having and is still possible. MAU is here with a few ways to remind you that your dream job is still waiting for you to get up and chase it!

1. Invest in yourself, invest in your dream!

You are your most valuable asset and therefore must treat yourself accordingly. For too long you’ve spent your days simply going through the motions of life. You wake up, go to a job you can barely tolerate, come home, sleep, and wake the next morning to do it all over again. Don’t spend your time hoping things change or wishing they’d get better. Invest in yourself and change your situation. Identify your dream job and the traits needed to land the gig. Do you want to be an author? Invest in yourself, take a writing class. Maybe you want to be a superhero? Invest in yourself, take a self-defense class or costume design. Whatever your dream job may be, make sure you are investing in yourself and developing the necessary skill-set to land the job!

2. Remove money from the equation!

I know, I know, this seems impossible right? After all, you’re an adult. You have bills, responsibilities, and life happens! Before you completely write me off answer me this, “Isn’t money one of the main reasons you ended up in this position?” You’re working in a position that is simply a means to an end. Sure it barely pays the bills and is not fulfilling at all, but its money right? Forget money as your motivator! If you were not being paid to do what you do every day would you still do it? My guess is probably not. Your dream job should bring you satisfaction despite the paycheck. I’m not saying you should jump ship and leave all of your responsibilities behind. However, you can prepare to cover your responsibilities while working towards your dream job. Let’s be realistic, progress is a process so let’s try a few of the following ideas: create a budget, develop an emergency fund, chip away at existing debt, rid yourself of bad habit bank-breakers, and build daily routines that move you closer to your goal.

3. Open your eyes to the possibilities before you!

It’s easy to get tunnel-vision as an adult, when thinking about what you want to be. Don’t become pigeonholed by what you know or what you’ve become comfortable with. Open your mind to new opportunities. There are so many available fields of work you have yet to explore like, medical, IT, manufacturing, clerical, engineering, and so much more. Don’t you remember in elementary school when you were asked what you wanted to be when you grew up and your eyes filled with wonder at the very thought of all the things you could be? Well, you still can be any of those things. The world is full of possibilities!

You owe it to yourself to chase your dream. Don’t let where you are now dictate where you chose to go in the future because your dream job doesn’t have an expiration date. It will be there waiting for you to decide that you still want it. Life is more fulfilling when you’re pursuing your passion and your job is something that you should be passionate about. If you’re not sure where to start your dream job search let us help you get moving in the right direction. Visit the MAU job board for a multitude of opportunities near you.  Remember, your dream job awaits so be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire!
