Getting Enough ZZZs? Sleep Deprivation and Workplace Safety
June 21, 2017 5:04:25 PM

How much sleep did you get last night? According to a recent study from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, if your answer is less than 7 hours, it wasn’t enough. Sleep deprivation has been linked to numerous adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and anxiety, not to mention safety issues related to drowsy driving and injuries. The study, which analyzed data of over 180,000 working adults, grouped the participants by industry, finding that several industries did reflect higher percentages of sleep deprivation. Overall, nearly 37% of participants were sleep deprived. Not surprising, occupations that required alternative shift work, such as production, healthcare, and transportation, reflected higher prevalence of sleep deprivation.

As an employer, it’s important to be mindful of this sometimes unassuming safety risk in your workplace. Multiple studies have concluded that employees with a sleep disorder are more likely to be involved in a workplace safety incident. In addition, fatigue related productivity losses cost nearly $2,000 per employee per year according to a 2010 study conducted by Cupertino, CA-based Alertness Solutions. While it’s ultimately the employee’s responsibility to stay well-rested, providing information, resources, and motivation to your employees can help mitigate risks.
