December 13, 2018 12:20:00 PM

The new year is quickly approaching with less than a month until 2019 is here. As your company is preparing a business plan for the year 2019, have you considered what changes will need to be made? A company’s sustainability is often a major concern for businesses; as the continued long term growth of a business is a vital focus-point. When considering the importance of the sustainability of a business, is your team also taking into account the sustainability of the planet?

Sustaining the Planet and Your Profit

Sustainability focuses on meeting the ecological needs of the present, while not causing future generations to struggle. Currently, the world is in what is known as an ecological overshoot, which means we, as a society, are using more resources than we are able to restore or replace.

Is your company working towards maintaining a competitive advantage in your industry while improving your footprint on the environment? This may not automatically appear to have correlation with your business’s growth, but in reality, improving the environment can also have a significant impact on your success. When consumers see your company working towards improving the environment it can lead to an increase in sales as well as continued customer loyalty.

According to World Counts, “By 2025, the world population will be over 8 billion people. Around 2040, it could hit 9 billion and by 2100 it could reach a massive 11 billion people.” This is putting immense pressure on the planet and those who inhabit it, to keep up with the growth of the population and to have continual resources such as water, food, physical space, and other necessary elements for survival.

Consider companies such as Patagonia.  Patagonia’s products and services are unrelated to the environment, yet they have made it a part of their corporate social responsibility to consider their environmental footprint.  Patagonia CEO, Rose Marcario, is putting the planet first by utilizing the $10 million dollar tax cut to donate to organizations who are focused on protecting air, land, and water resources in order to prevent additional climate disruptions.

While this aggressive of a path may not be possible for all businesses, there are minor adjustments your company can make that would help provide a major impact to the quality of our air, water, soil, and other natural resource’s. This improved quality can help lead to an ultimately longer life span and allow the planet the opportunity to sustain itself for generations to come.

In our world, progress is imperative to succeed.
